Plasmids, small circular DNA molecules in bacteria, are crucial for CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing technology as they introduce CRISPR-Cas9 components into target cells and can be engineered to control the Cas9 protein and guide RNA expression. Some plasmids can carry multiple guide RNAs, allowing for simultaneous editing of various genes. However, challenges with plasmid uptake efficiency, size limitations, and the potential for unintended genetic changes exist. Ongoing research aims to develop more efficient plasmids and potentially synthetic molecules to refine the CRISPR system further.
