How AI Streamlines Cell Therapy Manufacturing
By Michelle Duquette, PhD, Invetech, and Geoffrey Stephens, PhD, AiCella, Inc

Artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to transform cell therapy manufacturing, enabling data-driven process optimization and real-time monitoring as well as more precise control of critical quality attributes (CQAs) and critical process parameters (CPPs). How AI tools are applied to cell therapy manufacturing depends on the response sought by the manufacturer, who may want to promote better cell growth or better understand the connection between manufacturing and patient response.
AI can assist in answering those questions using clinical data and manufacturing data sets. Response variables are a vital consideration, because data is the key limitation of this process. As the adage goes, “garbage in, garbage out” — a model is only as good as the data it is built upon.
Other pertinent examples of AI use in cell therapy production include predicting how scaleup will work and, at the end of the manufacturing process, QC data can be fed back into the AI algorithm to inform changes that improve manufacturing process outcomes.
