What Makes A RABS Design Effective In Aseptic Manufacturing?

Barrier system selection goes well beyond choosing between passive open, active open, and closed configurations. Each design places different demands on the surrounding room, airflow control, decontamination strategy, and operator interaction. Even a closed system with bio-decontamination should not automatically be treated as an isolator. Effective separation depends on how seals, gloves, access points, and machine geometry work together under actual production conditions. Operator ergonomics can also create unexpected weaknesses, while computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations provide valuable insight without guaranteeing installed performance. For existing lines, EU GMP Annex 1 adds another layer of complexity as teams balance contamination control expectations against equipment constraints and production schedules.

Explore the practical factors that shape barrier design, retrofit decisions, and long-term performance.
