How To Comply With The New NIH Transparency Rules For r/sNA Molecule Research
By Raffaella Hart and Vanessa Rodriguez

On June 1, 2025, the NIH Office of Science Policy implemented new transparency requirements for NIH-funded institutions engaged in research involving recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid (r/sNA) molecules. These regulations mandate that Institutional Biosafety Committees (IBCs) publicly disclose approved meeting minutes and provide contact information for key personnel. Here we outline the essential steps institutions must take to ensure compliance: updating policies and workflows to align with the new guidelines, drafting clear and comprehensive meeting minutes using NIH-provided templates, and maintaining accurate contact details for IBC members in the NIH registration system.
Furthermore, collaboration with experienced IBC administrators can facilitate the necessary policy modifications and the establishment of compliant committees. The overarching goal of these changes is to bolster public trust in biosafety practices, promoting transparency and accountability in scientific research. Institutions are encouraged to act swiftly in adopting these measures to demonstrate their commitment to responsible research practices. Explore how to effectively implement these changes while fostering a culture of safety and transparency in NIH-funded research.
